The "missing" reserve numbers (10, 11, 12, and 13) are the result of re-alignments, amalgamations, and historical land adjustments made by the Joint Indian Reserve Commission (JIRC) and federal authorities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
They were officially cancelled and cut off during the Royal Commission on Indian Affairs for the Province of British Columbia (commonly known as the McKenna–McBride Commission) between 1913 and 1916.
The original reserve allotments for the Nuchatlaht First Nation were recommended and surveyed in the late 19th century by Reserve Commissioner Peter O'Reilly. However, during the McKenna–McBride process, federal and provincial commissioners evaluated reserve allocations across BC to confirm, enlarge, reduce, or cut off lands.
Commissioners designated reserves 10, 11, 12, and 13 as "not required" or unutilized for permanent habitation/fishing at the time of inspection, resulting in them being severed from official reserve status and reverted to provincial Crown land.
Markale IR 10
Located on the north side of Esperanza Inlet, near the entrance to Markale Inlet/Cove, northwest of Nootka Island. It was traditionally used as a seasonal fishing station and campsite.
A-ut IR 11
Located along the shoreline of Esperanza Inlet, near A-ut Point/Bay. It served as a localized resource-gathering and coastal base for Nuchatlaht families.
Guaquin IR 12
Situated on Nootka Island, near the western coast facing the Pacific ocean and Nuchatlitz area. It was an outer-coast seasonal station used primarily for marine hunting and offshore fishing access.
Kopwai IR 13
Located on the Port Eliza arm of Esperanza Inlet (near Kopwai Point/Inlet). It was utilized for salmon fishing at river/stream mouths and shellfish harvesting.
The lands cut off during the McKenna–McBride Commission have formed part of the historical context behind broader land rights, specific claims, and Aboriginal title litigation pursued by Nuchatlaht over their traditional territory ( ha'houlthee ) on and surrounding Nootka Island.
